.sad eyes

This is what my baby's eyes look like everyday... since he was a newborn.
Poor Baby...
Poor Mommy.
Every time we go to the doctor it's the usual "oh, he'll just grow out of it" and "here's some eye drops..." even though those eye drops were for the treatment of pink eye. Until I finally made an appointment with a pediatric opthamologist at Primary Children's. He was AWESOME! He told me that Nixon will not grow out of it, and if I do not treat it now it will become very difficult to treat later on in his life. The treatment is surgical probing under general anestesia... have you had any experiences with babies and anestesia? I'm seriously counting down to his surgery next month... but am also worried! I know people don't really comment on blogs anymore, but any input would be awesome!

As you know, we LOVE Dr. Hoffman! He is the best you could get. Nick has had the same thing done. From 2 months till about 2 years he had them probably 3x a year. Now, it has only been once a year or so. Anyway, Nick always did really well with the anestesia. Sometimes it can be scary for them as they are waking up, but PCH has always been really good about getting a parent right by the child's side as they are coming off it. I could write a lot more, if you have questions... you know my number :) Please feel free to call.

My nephew just went in to get tubes in his ears and he did just fine. He didn't have any issues coming out of anesthesia. He is 7 months.

I have LOTS of experience with babies and anesthesia. I used to work at Shriners doing pre-op teaching with the kids. One of the most important things to know is that when they wake up, they will be in exactly the same mental state as they were when they went to sleep. So if they're scared when they go down, they'll probably be way scared when they wake up. He'll most likely be able to take a comfort object with him until he's asleep and then you can give it right back when he's waking up. They'll probably give him a pretty good sedative before they even give him the anesthesia so he'll be loopy and perhaps really funny. Just depending on his temperament. He'll probably whine and be sad for a while but kids are super resilient and will probably bounce back super quick. Just be soft with him and love him and assure him that you're there. Take advantage of the Rec. Therapist or Child Life specialist (whatever one they have). They're so under appreciated. Not that I'm biased or anything... I'm glad they found something to fix. Primary Childrens is a great hospital and I'm sure it will be great!

I tend a little guy with the same problem. His parents' were also told he'd grow out of it. Thanks for the info, I'll pass it on to them. You might ask your doctor about colloidal silver spray. I know some people recommend spraying that on the eyes to help clear things up. You can buy it at a health food/supplement store.

oh Carrie, You know I totally feel your pain. I hated clogged ducts, and guess who has them now. Yep, I get to do it all over again with this little Miss. Bennett grew out of his right at a year, like I was told. Why did he say that Nixon would not grow out of it? Poor Bennett had to go under for his cyst. He had a general for his surgery and another kind(not sure what it was called) for a MRI to prep for the surgery. I will tell you that I by far preferred the general because of how they put him out. For his MRI it started with an IV, TORTURE for everyone involved. Finally by the 6th try they got it in. I have nightmares about that day, no joke. The general they just put a mask on them and they are out. The bad part was that we could not be there for it but I think at Primary Childrens you can. You might want to check into that before hand. I did not expect them to just come and take him away, and that really bothered me and I would have liked to know that ahead of time. I guess it is really common for kids to wake up really upset. I did not have that experience. Bennett was so clam and happy so that was a relief. Feel free to call me because I could go on and on. I wished that I had talked to people more about what to expect but I have already given my giant shpeel. I am so sorry you guys have to go through this. It really is sucky!

I was reading what Erika said about how they will wake up in the same mental state as they were when they went to sleep...

I had to laugh thinking about Dani when she had surgery as a baby... ha ha ha That explains so much!
